In our first summer on Canaan Street, I really wanted a garden. But the long-neglected yard required taming first.

So I planted a single pack of “Autumn Beauty” sunflowers near the barn and went on with the business of fending off the encroaching forest.

Uncomplaining, these easy-going flowers made their own way, with very little help from me.

Probably the highest reward-to-effort ratio of anything I’ve ever planted (except sugar snap peas)!
